Strange. I had no issue walking in, paying full price for my Verizon model, and popping in my AT&T sim. The Apple representative did state that I would have to pay full price and there would be no option for IUP or carrier financing.

That's makes sense. I tried to do it through the upgrade program..

lead me to believe that the sales person has no idea what they were doing. I wonder if they didn't select "Device Only" on their point of sales device. If they selected deve only then they should not be asking for carrier account info.

If you try to enroll iUP, you must have Verizon account to enroll for the verizon model. Same goes for att model, you need att account and same for t mobile and sprint. Once you leave the store you can then insert your att SIM card and should work.

OP was trying to do this via IUP and not a full-price purchase. As you note, it doesn't work that way.
