Reset 2nd Gen Apple TV. Trying to set up with remote app, not working

i foolishly reset my Apple TV due to HBO GO not working properly. I've lost my physical remote long ago and had no issues with the remote app til now when I have to set up the Apple TV from scratch.

Is there a solution I'm not finding online or do I just have to purchase a physical remote?

a lot of smart remotes have the Apple TV codes in them.
check out the remote that came with your TV or cable box,

shame it's not the 3rd Gen, you can set that one up from scratch pretty easily with the iOS app.
