Hello,
A while back I wanted to switch all my e-mail accounts to IMAP in order to have all my mail load syncronized (messages read, unread, ecc ) across all of my apple devices ( mac, ipad, iphone).
I went thriugh all the steps required (which I cant recall now), but in the end it didnt work as I expected and so I dropped the intention.
Now I am about to migrate all of my data to a new macbook, so I engaged into some cleaning duties in order to avoid transferring useless data to the new machine.
These included wiping out several thousands spam messages from my mail inboxes.
Shortly after I did so, upon the daily launch of the mail app, I saw that ALL of my messages (around 20.000) had been deleted except for those dated up to one month before ( a new total of around 1000 were in my inbox).
I panicked a bit and read all I could about the issue, but without being able to come to a solution.
Yet I found out where the emails locally reside (Users/Me/Library/Mail/V2) and realized that they had not been deleted, they just weren't being displayed inside of the mail app.
After this, at every launch of the mail app, the program just tried to slowly download the thousands of messages missing, inevitably crashing after 10-20 mins.
So apparently mail never managed to complete the task, but did something since the V2 folder now has grown by a good 50% of its original size prior to the whole occurrence. Now inside of this folder I can see there are sub folder for POP - AND!!! - IMAP messages for both of the my two main addresses (hotmail and gmail) and as you can see in the picture attached they take up most of the space.
So my intention would be to perform the migration to the new mac and from it finalize once for all the mail issue.
But where to start in order to have both of the addresses performing full IMAP functionality across devices?
What should I do first?
My main goals would be to:
Have the addresses working with IMAP
Do not lose ALL my messagess locally
But still manage to delete those folders that might look as duplicates.
How can I achieve these result?
Thanks a lot for bearing with me this far!!!! I hope I can get answers
