Reset administrator password

When I tried to download a program on my Mac, I tried to use my administrators password to log in and could not get in. Can anyone tell me how I can retrieve or reset it?

If you do not have a firmware password or file vault you can probably boot into single user mode (cmd+s on boot) and use passwd [username] to change the password.
