Reset data and settings (3G 3.1.2)... wrong move?

So got the IP4 and setting up the 3G to sell. I still had 3.1.2 and was planning to swipe it clean, then jb and unlock. I went in and did the Reset Data and Settings. According to a thread here (which i didn't read until after) this deleted the OS also??? ugh... not what i wanted.

so it's now stuck at the apple logo. i'm able to get to the "usb plug in" screen (dfu mode?) by holding down the home button while plugging in the usb. this way, itunes recognizes it. it then wants to install ios4. again, not what i wanted.

is there anyway to get 3.1.2 back on here?

you have a 3G, just use pwnagetool to make make a jb 4.0 OS file and flash it onto the phone.

i did a quick search of the forums and found the pwnage tool 4.0 thread https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/945907/

is it a simple as just... upgrading to ios4 via itunes, jailbreak via redsnow and unlock via ultrasnow?

is there a preferred tutorial - i checked youtube but not sure if there's a single, better one - out there for this?
