I'm trying to reset my 17" macbook pro.

I held command and R on boot and it downloaded from web and took couple hours to complete.

But when it finished it rebooted and asked for my login password and everything still there.

It did not reset.

Did I do it wrong?

You missed a step. Once you command-r boot into recovery, you need to use Disk Utility to erase the disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then quit Disk Util and install. That will give you a fresh OS install with nothing else on there.
