Reset my settings, phone wont recognize contacts

I did a settings reset yesterday with hopes of making my 4S run faster after comparing it to a friends. Since then, my phone refuses to recognize my contacts unless their number is written in the form 1 (XXX) XXX-XXXX. I get calls from numbers that i know, but it wont tell me who it is. ALL of my contacts however are listed simply as 9 digits with no spaces -'s or (). Anyone have this issue before? and any ideas how to resolve it?

Edit:
I should mention that i didn't chose to reset any data, only settings. so all my contacts are still listed as they were when they were working fine.
