reset password, macbook not recognising

Hello, I had to reset my password, as I was installing some new software. Now the system isn't recognising my new password and my user system seems to be locked and I can't access it all. When I initially tried inputing the passwords I use it didn't recognise any of them, it may have locked then due to me trying wrongly too many times. Any advice please would be great.
