Resetting Admin Password

I have tried everything Apple has instructed to do. I am trying to reset the admin password because I lost it.

I try holding down C while my iMac is booting up, and it just takes me to the accounts screen.

So, any ideas? I am on 10.6.8. Thanks in advance!

Go to preferences, then accounts (I think, it's something like that), click on the admin account and there should be a field for creating a new password. It'll prompt you for your existing password too. Hope that helps/works.

Use your Mac OS X install disk. Restart the computer and hold down "option". Select the DVD and it will boot up the installer. Once you get into the installer, go to the menu bar and there should be an option to reset password under Utilities.

No, only the admin password is altered.

could not open accounts in preferences

hi all,..am using mac mini with osx 10.6.8(snow leopard)
am trying to change my user account name and password, so am suppose to go system preferences -> accounts.
when am opening it system preferences gets closed with error message as "System preferences closed un expectedly" please anyone help what i have to do,..with my mac mini,..am really helpless,.

Go to the /Users/****/Library/Caches folder, select all files and delete them, then restart and try again.

whether it make any changes in my mac,..bcoz am developing application lot of documents and keychains also there,..if catch cleared i want to know whether it will affect my cookies and other saved data,..

Then follow these steps:

1. Turn off you Mac.
2. Turn it back on in and boot into Single-User Mode.
3. At the prompt run these commands:

fsck -yf

-this will repair your hard disk. It will take a while but wait until it is done and found no problems and give you another prompt.

The run:

mount -uw /

And then run the last command

rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone

Lastly run the command (to boot back into OS X)

reboot

Your Mac will now reboot into a mode like you first turned on your Mac. You can create a new Admin account through this but it will not erase anything you have installed.

Clearing the Cache I mentioned will not delete anything you mentioned.

No use, Still i can't change my Admin login password.

I have Three Login Accounts Namely

1. Admin
2. Guest
3. SaravanKumar

the third one is my login and it has given admin permission, I need to change the password for that login.

I tried with @satcomer but NO USE,..

I hav tried every suggestions on this thread but NO USE,.

Please help me some one,..

Boot to single user mode by holding cmd + s on startup. Then type mount uw / then type launchctl load System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist then type ls users to view users. Now type dscl . -passwd /Users/your username new pass. Then type exit. Good luck
