I had to reset my PRAM today, powered off, press the left side shift, alt, cmd and power button at the same time, then release.

As soon as i release the keys the MBA powers on.

I did this a few months ago before the updates and i could have sworn i had to press the power button to turn on the MBA after the 3 key reset, i checked the KB article and it says the final step is to power on the mac too.

So I'm curious as to whether the PRAM reset did actually work?

That's almost a reset of the SMC (aka PMU) rather than the PRAM. PRAM is Option-Cmd-P-R at boot and wait for the second chime. SMC is left-hand Option-Shift-Crtl (do not press Cmd) and power button for 5 seconds when shutdown.
