Resizing partition with cli...

Hi, I'm trying to resize the only partition on my external harddrive.
I tried the following:
Code: 
Cherry-Tree:~ lumio$ diskutil resizeVolume disk1s1 240G
Error resizing volume

When I use limits instead of the new size:
Code: 
Cherry-Tree:~ lumio$ diskutil resizeVolume disk1s1 limits
Error obtaining resizing information

Resizing encountered error on disk disk1s1 Waffal: Could not modify partition map (-9986)

Does anyone know, why this errormessages appears?
