resizing window openings 27"

newbie, upon opening a new window i would like it larger--in between what it opens as, and the full screen that i have to use--must be an easy simple way to set that--problem is if i stumble around and try to do it on my own i create a lot of unnecessary havoc--thank you for your help-

this has changed in YOSEMITE ... I also don't like it

hold down option & the green buttion changes to a resize....

the option key and green button is perfect --however i would like it better if it opened that way. and there may be a way to set how they open,? until then this will work just fine. and i will play with the other options.-thank you
