resolution help

A few days ago my cat jumped on my imac and it fell breaking the LCD screen . It costs alot of money to have it repaired so i just went out and got a monitor. now i cant get the resolution right so on the left of my screen theres a bunch of stuff i cant see like when i open files they open on the left side so i need to fish it out by clicking and dragging for 10 minutes. if anyone has some advise on my situation it would be greatly appreciated.

You can experiment with different resolutions in System Preferences > Displays.

Are you using a crt or lcd monitor, and what connection type?

its a dell monitor with a mini dvi to divi cable
