mbp8.2 (amd radeon hd6750m / intel hd3000)

on bootup, the apple logo shows in something like 640x480 4x3 resolution.. when i gets to the login, it switches back to its proper default resolution.

i've had this before on this machine, even worse, the resolution had to be changed manually.
so I upgraded from SL to ML and it disappeared for a while. now it's back after connecting the notebook to a vga - beamer....

resetting the nvram (opt-cmd-p-r) on bootup does the trick but the problem keeps returning.

any ideas what could cause that and how to get rid of it?
