Hi,
I bought a MBP 15" a few months ago and I have been having problems connecting an external display. I use the mini-to-standard-dvi adapter to connect my LCD TV to the MBP. The TV has a native resolution of 1280x720.
In bootcamp with Win7 everything works perfectly but in OSX the picture becomes garbled and says "out of range". However, lower resolutions like 1024x768 works.
After hours of googling I installed SwitchResX which gave me the possibility to see detailed information about the different available resolutions. And when I looked at the available 1280x720 resolution, I realized that it was actually a scaled down 1920x1280 resolution.
I was able to create a custom non-scaled 1280x720 resolution with SwitchResX, and after a reboot it was applied and it now works perfectly!
My guess is that the OSX display software must detect my TV as having a native 1920x1080 resolution and therefor down-scaling some of the lower resolutions. But why not offering a real, non-scaled 1280x720 alternative? And why not display any information about native resolution for the displays? Within the OSX display properties it is impossible to see that the chosen resolution is actually down-scaled. I'm at least glad I found SwitchResX which is pretty awesome
