Greetings,
Please note I'm referring to paying the least number of payments required to trade in your phone - not to own your phone (so I owe around 140.00 vs paying 800 bucks to pay the phone off). I've always been able to do this in years past and order from Apple on launch day and I was still shipped a box to trade in my old phone. This isn't the case this year. I think this is an effort to force folks to order from ATT directly. I called and spoke to a rep from ATT and he said that is indeed what I would have to do this year. He didn't know why it was changed. I went to Apple's site and tried to see how far I could get with trying to purchase an iPhone 12 Pro (I'm holding out for the Pro Max). It stated I could go to an Apple Store and pay the smaller amount and then I could upgrade immediately. Ironically I have to get my car serviced today and they are giving me a loaner. They are down the street from the only Apple store in the area. I'm going to stop by and see if this is true. I find it strange I can pay Apple that amount but not ATT.

I will report back my findings later today.

Has anyone else run into this ?

Cheers,
Bobbie

Go to part of your account where it shows installment info. There you get payment info and what not.

Nope I have tried on the app and website even the rep couldn't do it. I can only do that if I buy from ATT and only once the iPhone 12 Pro Max is out. The only option I get to pay it is if I choose a new device. I can't do that b/c the phone isn't out yet. In past years I was able to pay this amount so when I went to Apple it would let me get the device and add it to my NEXT plan. This year I did a test trial on the apple site choosing the iPhone 12 Pro (not the model I want I just wanted to test what would happen) and it said I could pay the 144.00 at an Apple store to upgrade. I'm going to ask the folks at the Apple store this afternoon when I'm there. I can see the option only to pay the device off in full right now unless I'm ready to buy a phone from ATT. Normally I purchase from Apple b/c I can usually get a launch day delivery. I haven't had the same luck with ATT.

I’ve definitely already paid mine off on the AT&T website two weeks in ago in preparation for the Mini.

I had a problem upgrading my iPhone early this year too. I ended up finding a loophole by starting an order from Best Buy. It asked me to pay the remaining balance on my payment plan and then after I did I closed the app and was able to order from Apple directly. The at&t site wouldn’t let me pay it at all.

Log in to your AT&T account via web browser. Go into the view billing section. Click on the line with the payment plan, and you'll see an option to "Manage Payment Plan". Click on that, and you'll have an option to pay off the device.

She already tried logging into her account etc. Even the rep on the phone couldn’t do it.

Out of curiosity, I just went into my account to see if something changed and you can either pay to upgrade (if not paid off 50%) or pay off the remaining installment balance. That is strange that she is unable to see these options.

Were you paying the $5 Next Up fee each month to trade up early at 50%?
Yes I believe I was because I do upgrade each year. I chatted with Apple and they said that made 0 sense....so I guess if I decide to go forward with the new iPhone I will get up really early since ATT seems to post things on their site around 5 am or so on pre-order day to see if I can get a launch day delivery. In all honesty l hate the new 8 am ET time. Last year was the first time I didn't manage a launch time delivery. I ended up cancelling with Apple and re-ordering with ATT to get my phone before we left for Cairo. I did this around noon on pre-order Friday. I didn't get a launch day delivery but managed to get it the following Monday. Apple had me pushed out a week and I would have been out of the country and on the trip that justified the new camera features.
