Restart after going into Field Test Mode Issue

So yesterday, I had no bars on my phone after coming out of a office buildings basement. I was in a hurry, so didn't want to wait for it to grab a signal. I put it into Field test mode to see if it would grab a little faster. It thought about it for a second and then rebooted. Now, without having to go into Field Test Mode, I can rotate my signal strength indicator between the bars and negative number. How'd I get it to do this?
