I was talking to a friend earlier and she works for att and she said I would have to pay a 50$ restocking fee if I did return the phone out of the box and used for the <14 day return policy.
I dont know how true this is has anyone been charged a 50$ restocking fee? Ill take this phone back to apple not att for a return.
I will probably end up going to Verizon to a family plan didnt know this when I ordered the phone and im curious about the size of the phone I want to test it out and see if I like it before I reorder a Verizon one.

I think they do charge a fee on opened items - not sure if it’s a set $50 or a percentage of the cost of the item.

If you bought it from Apple you would not take it back to AT&T, you would return to Apple.

Apple has no return fee, just make sure you do it within the first 14 days.
well I ordered from apples app not att. But its on the my att next plan so im really not sure.

I saw on the att website when I placed my order that there was no restocking fee

Then you go by Apple’s policy.
this is why its confusing everyone says they arent getting restocking fees but this is clearly on apples website.

Sorry if I misunderstood your post but...
Why are you returning a phone you haven't even received yet?
You've already convinced yourself that you are going to open it?
Me and my mom agreed to try Verizon on a family plan to take that deal they are having right now.
We both have lines on att out of contract and are going to switch.
but wont switch till the XR comes out so a few more weeks. I also would like to see if I even like the max size over the X but I still have to return it either way now since we are going to switch carriers.

Well I stand corrected. I’ll tell you 2 cool stories. Once, I returned the one I got for my wife. It was opened but she wanted the plus size. There was no restocking fee or open box fee for me. Now just because I wasn’t charged one doesn’t mean it’s not policy. Policy clearly shows they are suppose to charge a fee. 2 fees if it’s an open box. I’m glad I wasn’t charged.

Secondly, that same year, I had gotten the 6s plus on release date. That first day, i went to ups to pick up my iPhone. I went to work after and I was going to go to Apple at lunch time to get an Apple case for it. Well what do you know, I dropped my new iPhone on the floor and the whole screen was cracked because of it. I was so mad. I went to Apple at lunch time and just happened to tell the first Apple employee what happened. Not looking for anything. Just telling the story about my drop. He said, “that sucks. Not a problem though, come with me to the front.” Once up front, he said, “it’s unfortunate you dropped it. Since it just happened, I’ll exchange it for another new one.” I asked how much was it going to be. He said do not worry about it. This was on launch day. He said someone had just cancelled their order on the same one I had and it was the only one available. He took the cracked screen iPhone off my account and added the new sealed iPhone to the account. Didn’t pay a damn thing. I was so fortunate that day. I didn’t even have apple care on the phone. I can back to that store after 7 minutes with a Starbucks cappuccino for that young man.

you got lucky wow.
I mean ill have a little chat with a rep here soon to see for sure id like to try it out for the 14 days before I return it and reorder a Verizon one. Ill baby it It will be ok

I’ve never had a restocking fee from Apple when returning an iPhone before. Didn’t know it was policy.

As for AT&T I know they charge a restocking fee but I’ve seen a new policy that says no restocking fee if you purchased online. So probably only pay if you purchase in store.

So you want to rent it for free with no intention of keeping it?
How dare they want to charge a restock fee when they can just take that phone and throw it in the garbage after you return it.

Carriers like AT&T & Verizon will offer no re-stocking fees on online orders often. The catch is the device has to shipped back, not returned to a store. You can return a device to an AT&T store that you buy online and will be able to negotiate the restocking fee if you haven't opened the device yet in my experience.

No negotiation needed. AT&T stores will waive the restock fee in store if:

A) It's an Apple device.
B) It has not been opened.
C) Purchased online.

If it meets those criteria, they should waive the restocking fee.

If there's a negotiation needed, then it's simply someone who may not be fully aware of the special criteria for Apple products. The management should be aware, however.

but what about opening it and using it for a week before returning?

Apple store no restocking fee for 14 days (from delivery date) as long as in like new condition

I will never order from att.com again. Last year. I decided to return unopened brand new iPhone X. And the store tried to demand a $45 restocking fee for unopened iPhone X. I literally was arguing with manager about this. CAlled att while inside an att corp store.

Finally decided to drive another 15 miles to another att store to do the return. Freaking waste of 3-4 hours of my time. (1 hour wait to just get service). Arguing 45 min. Drive another 20-25 min to next store. Wait another 45 minutes.

Never again

I think the issue is that if using a search engine to find the return policy, might be getting some other version of it.

I just went directly to the Apple site and drilled down: no restocking fee listed. Only caveat for phones was about canceling service and wiping device.
