Restore a specific backup.

Hi,

When I restore my iPhone from iTunes (latest version on a Mac running Lion), I can only restore the latest backup.

Is there a way to save a specific backup for later use, e.g. so I can restore to a know state if I do something silly? Or would such a restore be restoring as a new phone, followed by a sync (loosing all SMSes of course, but I can live with that)?
