Restore backup to older iOS

Hi all,

I updated my iPhone to iOS 4.2.1, but because I had a broken lock key, I downgraded to iOS 4.0.1.

Now I want to restore my phone from backup, but it says it can't because they are from a future update! Is there a way to get that data back on my phone (I specifically want the SMS, I don't are about the rest!)
