Restore Facotry Settings/Wipe Data on iMac

My parents just gave me their iMac, and I would like to restore factory settings and get rid of all their data in order to start fresh with the data from my own laptop. However, they don't have the any of the startup or software discs the computer came with. My dad said the last time he upgraded the OS he did it as a download, and it's currently running 10.6.8. However, he also said some of the programs that are currently on there (i.e. pages, word, etc.) didn't come originally, and if I restore settings and wipe I will loose all of those things. Any suggestions on what I should do and how I should go about doing it? Thanks!

Just create a new admin user account and delete the old one(s).
