''restore from backup''..deletes apps on iphone?

It will put them back to how they were in that backup.
Before doing that, transfer all purchases to iTunes, do a right click and select from the menu.
If you keep a list of what you have, you can re-download them. With the new iTunes App Store, you will be able to push all the apps you have ever bought to your iOS device.
