Restore from PC to Laptop

Hi,

I have a Iphone 3GS.
Currently, i am syncing it with my PC. But i am moving out of the house and so i will not be able to sync it anymore with my PC.
And thus, plan to sync it now with my laptop.

What i need to know is how do i sync it with my laptop and ensure that i dont lose my contacts and SMS's...
Is there any way i can take a backup of my contacts and sms's from my iphone while it is still syncing to the PC, then using those backup's, sync it through the laptop and retain all the data.

Thanks in advance. Any help would be much appreciated.
