All iPads Restore iPad backup to iPad Mini?

I just bought a Mini from Apple. I set it up, but then realized that all of my old messages were not going to sync. I was thinking about restoring a backup from my Air 1, that I still have and use, to the Mini. My question is will this cause any problems going forward in iTunes or with an iCloud backup and will they now think they are the same device?
 
The restore from the Air to the mini will work fine, as long as the restore goes ok, they will be identical.
