Somewhat of a noob, be gentle (please use lube on the noob).

I bought a 3GS from a friend. He did not restore the phone before he gave it to me. I used jailbreakme.com to JB/unlock, but I didn't restore before the JB/unlock. So, I can't sync to get videos/songs to my comp and now I want to.

It was upgraded to 4.0.1 before the JB/unlock and still has 4.0.1.

So, what is the best method to restore, then JB/unlock again? If I restore, will the os be downgraded?

I don't want to brick it.

thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply, Applejuiced.

Yes, I says SHSs on file for 4, 4.01, 4.02

What are the steps to restore, then sync, then JB/Unlock?

Great.
You gotta download the official 4.0.1 ipsw.
Edit your hosts file to redirect to cydias server and then restore your phone thru iTunes. Then kick it out of recovery once done restoring with tinyumbrella.

Sounds like high risk ;)

Do you know of any tuts for this?

Thanks for all your help.

Or, is there a workaround to get my media on my phone without the restore/reJB?

Yes, I get the default warning that everything will be wiped. I don't have a problem with this, but won't this kill my JB? Again, I don't have a problem with that as long as I can re-JB. I just don't want to brick it.

No, that wont erase your JB or unlock.
It will just wipe the music, ringtones, photos and other stuff synced thru itunes.

I guess that seemed to easy.

So, do I just leave my SIM in? Do I need the original SIM(I have it)?

Thanks for all the hand-holding!

SWEEEET!

Like I said, I'm a noob.

Your help/info has been awesome, thanks so much!

Well, I haven't done it yet. Will do it this evening.

If you never hear from me again, then it blew up ;-)
