hey there -
My 3GS (3.1.2 / 4.11.28) got stuck at the apple logo after trying to remove the trial version of mywii thru rock. I then put the iPhone in recovery mode, used my custom ipsw 3.1.2 generated when I initially JBroke my iPhone (pwnage tools)....
1. itunes did not give me any error message while verifying the restore? Is that normal? I thought they had stopped signing earlier fw?
2. I then restored from my last back up and everything but apps/music showed up.
3. cydia is installed. is my iPhone fully jailbroken? Do I have to redo the pwnage thing?
4. I thought I would have to go thru Saurik's restore method (I have SHSH on file)...

any thoughts?
If this is it, I'm quite happy - I really thought it was going to take me forever to restore my phone, and right now, all I have to do, is pretty much reinstalling few cydia apps... no big deal really...

Yes, once you're on the jaibreak train with a pwned iPhone, as long as toucan get it into recovery (not DFU) mode, you will always be able to restore to a custom firmware. This is why it is so important to stay on the jailbreak train.

thanks for clarifying!

Is there a way to restore the phone to factory settings (and keep it jailbroken, as mentioned above?)

That's not possible.

So... the correct procedure would be to put the iPhone in DFU mode, restore it with a custom 3.1.2 ipsw? Will this also sync all my personal data?
I'm just trying to find the easiest/best way to wipe my phone clean before selling it. I don't mind going through the JB procedure again; I just do not want my iphone FW/baseband to be updated in the restore process!

EDIT: meant recovery mode, not DFU.

All you gotta do is restore to the custom 3.1.2 that you have.
When it asks you on itunes if you want to restore from backup or setup as new select new.
Nothing will be on the iphone then and you can go ahead and sell it like that.

sounds easy - thank you!

that said, I got one question:
when I launch cydia, I'm told that my SHSHs are on file for 3.1.3... thing is, I'm on 3.1.2, and would like to restore to 3.1.2... I know I've got a custom ipsw for 3.1.2, but will run into a verification issue if I only have 3.1.3 shshs?

EDIT: no issue whatsover. iPhone restored w a 3.1.2 FW, jailbroken, and ready to go.
