I have an iOS backup from my old phone (running iOS 8), and all I would like to transfer my iMessages & SMS texts to my new phone (also iOS 8). I don't want to restore everything. I just want to text messages.

I'm told that all the texts are stored in a sms.db database. I found this file already. But how do I get it onto the new iPhone?

Open the backup using iBackupBot for Windows or Mac, find the sms.db (and attachments if you want them, they are in System Files > MediaDomain > Library > SMS) and select it.
Then you can use the "Restore" button, and it will restore just what you selected, with your messages, and not change anything else on the phone.

You will lose any messages that are currently on the phone.
