restore to previous backup using time machine

I accidently deleted several files that I meant to copy to a USB drive long story short I want to restore my mac to the state it was before I made any changes. I inserted my OS X install disc and selected the backup from which to restore but for some reason Macintosh HD is not a restore destination option. HELP!! I can only restore to my windows partition (30gb) or my USB drive that is still connected.
 
I've somehow gotten out of the restore mode but my computer is not returned to the desired state however it seems like I haven't lost any data. I currently have about 100 icons on my desktop. What's the best way to return my mac to the way it was a few hours ago (with no icons on my desktop)
