Hi all,
I recently had some weird trouble with a Carbon Copy Cloner move. I just bought a new hard drive, so I cloned my old drive onto the new one. Unfortunately, when I tried to open Adobe CS3 programs on the new drives, I had two problems. 1) Illustrator wouldn't open at all. 2) Photoshop told me that it "Could not initialize Photoshop because the disk is not available." I found a variety of fixes online, which didn't work for me, so I just started over again and cloned my old disk using the Apple Disk Utility Restore feature.
Since I was curious what went wrong, I did a test and tried cloning a drive with Restore, CCC, and SuperDuper. The Restore clone always worked perfectly. Both the CCC and SD clones, however, had some odd observations. When I open some applications, it notes that it "is a web application downloaded from the internet. Are you sure you want to open it?" It's as if I never opened these applications before.
This all leads to my question. What files do CCC and SD not copy when cloning? Why is the Restore clone apparently more complete? Should I be using a Restore automator task instead of CCC or SD to make backups?
Thanks!
