Some time ago, before trying out Void Linux, I backed up my Leopard install on my Powermac G5 to an image on a iMac running 10.11.

Now, I restored it via Firewire Target Disk Mode, but it won't boot. Is there something I should do? As usual Apple's support articles are useless.

Before you restored, did you partition the new disk as APM (Apple Partition Map)?

I just discovered that myself! Thanks! That was a lot of time wasted... I had to restore the DMG to the partition, not the disk.

Do you think the same needs to be done when burning a OS X ISO to USB?

Technically, late model Macs running Leopard can boot from GUID partitions, but not MBR. Most USB sticks tend to be formatted as FAT32 on an MBR partition. So, yeah, I'd make sure the USB stick was partitioned as APM and formatted as HFS+ Journaled.
