I was chatting to Apple Support and ran a diagnostics on my phone for the battery (this is mentioned in another thread) There is no fix yet but they did mention restoring the phone.

I back up to my MacBook and not iCloud.... I don't think I have ever done a factory reset, just already backed up and updated with each phone. I don't want to lose my message, my apps and music I can reinstall and I have iCloud Photo Library so that should be ok to... I was told though I must do it through iCloud. Here is what was said.

Support:

Well because the battery health is perfectly healthy, the next thing you could do is create a back up in iCloud and restore the device to factory settings.

Me:

ok I will try that, I back up to my MacBook. So I would restore from the backup?

Support:

You will have to create a back up in iCloud. Then restore the device to factory settings. Then you can restore from the iCloud backup to get the data back

...

I want to do this safely without losing my message.... can this be done?

Thanks

For what they’re trying it shouldn’t matter whether you use an iTunes backup or an iCloud backup.

Personally I’d backup to both before wiping your device - that way if there’s an issue you have another copy.

I’d also use an encrypted backup in iTunes - it backs up more of your personal info like health.
