Ladies and gentlemen,

First time poster - long time lurker.

My question is: how long should it take my MacBook Pro to boot up the first time after a full HDD restore from Time Machine in Lion 10.7.3?

I'm running a MacBook Pro 13" (mid-2010 model). A while back the cable between the logic board and the hard drive failed - I had this replaced under warranty. The genius in my local Apple Store Genius Bar advised me to wipe the hard drive and do a full restore from my regular Time Machine backups (on an external hard drive), which I did. I then left the MBP to boot up overnight - circa 12 hours - which it failed to do. For this whole period I was simply faced with the Apple logo in the middle of a mid-grey screen, with the spinning wheel underneath.

I did a force shutdown and took the MBP back to the Genius Bar, where a new HDD was installed under warranty, with Lion (10.7.0) installed. The genius performed no extensive diagnostic checks - he simply assumed that the HDD had died. Following HDD replacement, I then did a Time Machine backup of that Lion installation, before starting a Time Machine restore of the previous backup (10.7.3 - which I was initially attempting to restore).

This has sat with the grey Apple logo/spinning wheel screen for the last two and a half hours. Is this to be expected - or should I take it back to the Apple store (I have the extended warranty in place).

Many thanks in advance,

McGandalf.
