I have restored from Time Machine when I have upgraded my computer - but I have been told (by an Apple Store genius), that I need to do a clean install of Mavericks and then selectively restore to speed up my very slow 2007 iMac.

I know that if I do so, I want to restore my documents and applications (two directories), and especially my mail. But I'm wanting to find some more advice on how to know what to restore and what I need to skip.
