restoring my mac

So i am going to delete a partition in a few minutes, and resize my main one. It says it will destory all the data, which is ok because i will back it up. my problem is i don't know how to get all the data off my bootable hardrive onto my comp. i.e. prefrences, library. anyone have any ideas? thanks

migration assistant in the utilities folder

Or simply drag the folders/files into their equivalent spots on the new install and restart. Migration Assistant can be a bit dodgy sometimes...
