I bought two broken 3gs iphones on ebay. The logic boards are still working. One of them is on 4.0.2 but stilll has the previous owner's info on it. There's no passcode but there is a settings passcode that prompts me when I try to erase the info through settings. New bootrom.

The second phone has a passcode on it. I'm not sure what version is on it but I'm sure it's below 4.2.1. New bootrom.

Is there any way for me to restore both phones to factory settings without restoring to 4.2.1? I was thinking of jailbreaking the one on 4.0.2 with redsn0w and using SSH to delete the settings passcode and then erase the info through settings. Would this work or would it get stuck at the Apple Logo?

If both iPhones have the SHSH files save for 4.0.x that you can restore them. Otherwise your only option if they don't have the shsh saved, is to update to 4.2.1
