I upgraded to Lion a few weeks back (10.7.1) and everything went surprisingly well. Everything was functioning normally until I tried to install Xcode from the Mac App Store. It proceeded to erase my internal HD during installation but I stopped it before it could completely finish the job (a Google search found that this was not an isolated incident so be careful). However it did manage to erase my entire Application folder and who knows what else. So I decided to restore from a TM backup that was made just prior to the installation of Xcode. It appeared to do the trick but over the next week I noticed things weren't working as smoothly as before. I've booted into recovery mode, fixed permissions, uninstalled Flash, etc.. yet these issues still remain:
(1) EyeTV is extremely unstable now rendering it practically unusable.
(2) Steam crashes immediately upon launch.
(3) Applications like TextEdit and Address Book curiously don't launch instantly as before. Instead they take 10-15 seconds.
I've done pretty much everything suggested for #1 and #2 by the developers. I still have an open support ticket with El Gato for EyeTV but don't expect much. So I think the best thing to do is restore/rollback my system. I have the previously mentioned TM backups but I'm concerned I might experience the same few issues again, even if I choose a backup before the Xcode fiasco. I also have a working, bootable clone of my last day on Snowlion. And I have a Lion installation disc that I burned using the Lion Diskmaker utility.
My main concern is anything I've downloaded or done since restoring from TM after the Xcode fiasco. I don't want to lose it. I could restore from a TM backup made today and not lose anything but I'm guessing the issues would still be there. So I'm guessing the best thing to do is restore the Snowlion clone and install Lion over it from the burned installation disc I made. In order to minimize the work of getting my Mac back up to date I'm thinking I could copy my Applications, Pictures, Documents, and Movies folders to another HD then drag them back when everyhing is done. Or could I simply drag those folders into the Snowlion clone right now, overwriting the same folders in clone before restoring it? Or is there another way entirely I should go about this?
And what about a clean install? Do I have to completely wipe my internal HD before restoring from a clone or TM backup or will the restoration process do that for me?
If I have to start "fresh" from my Snowlion clone (then install Lion over it as before) without worrying about what I did in the past three weeks it wouldn't be the end of the world. I'm basically just trying to avoid re-doing the house cleaning I've done since I first upgraded to Lion. There's also a few files and such I can think of that I could drag to another external drive then back afterwards to save them but I'm sure there's a few I'd overlook. But I could deal with that. I just don't want to if I don't have to which is why I'm asking.
