Hi,

What is the deal with using TM from an "old" Mac to a new Mac?

I'm selling my Late 2014 and buying a new 2017. Can I just restore my stuff this way or will it fail? OS X version will match (current backups are for 10.14.1 which the new machine will be running, too).

Yes you can. But one very important note.... Do not create an account on the new machine before migrating your Time Machine backup. If you do, you'll wind up with a mess. A full Time Machine backup used for migration works well but as I stated above, do not create an account on the new machine before migrating. The Time Machine backup will carry over your account and information. No system data will be overwritten in the process.
