My local photo club had a 30 minute photo challenge this past Thur 9-28, simple rules:
-take picture in jpeg (I normally shoot only in RAW)
-no post processing allowed
-print from portable 4" x 6" (club has one)
-all within 30 minutes
-then show/explain/discuss what you attempted
(We meet in local conference room facillty, about 30 active members.)
Being cloudy-rainy, I wanted to capture some moody picture to reflect that, local lake was 5 minutes drive, so went there, tripod/T1i/15-85 lens.
after taking some color shots and review on LCD back, kinda flat colors due to late in evening, so I tried tungsten white balance on purpose to reflect a "blue feeling day", no PP done here
1a:
this is same "blue feel" image, just with PP done (crop/straighten/exposure/highlights/sharpen)
1b:
I changed the in camera to monochrome for BW feel, no PP done here
2a:
this is the in-camera monochrome shot, with PP done.
2b:
I was dis-appointed at the lack of range on my original shots (1a, 2a), they looked good in camera, but sucked when printed....
At home I was easily able to use PP and make at least a decent image (1b, 2b) to what I was trying to capture.
Simply, am I relying too much on PP and not getting the proper exposure in camera to begin?
Have I gotten "lazy" at exposure?
I realize shooting at near dusk with overcast is difficult to get proper exposure, and the rain/mist in the air added to the softness of the shots.
I've not shoot in jpeg for so long possible I don't know the camera settings to give me better "in camera" processing?
Side discussion I heard from people at the club is "Nikon allows in camera PP for some stuff after shot is taken (crop/other), while Canon does not". I was not directly involved with that discussion so did not further pursue.
