EDIT: I figured it out. I had the right idea; turns out my itl file was corrupted. I snatched the current itl file from my Power Mac, and it seems to be working. I'll update if it fails.
I
I'm in the process of transferring my 500 plus GB library from my old Power Mac G5 to my shiny new 2011 MBP. I would strongly like to retain my "date added" information, as it dates back a few years, and I have a bunch of smart playlists based on it.
II
I have an SSD (128GB) and an HDD (1TB). The boot drive (OS X Lion, all my programs, the user folder) is on the SSD, while my music is on the HDD.
III
I symlinked the iTunes folder, so it shows on the SSD under the user folder (i.e when I click on music, , the iTunes symlink is contained in the folder, which then directs me back to the HDD). I use the exact same file path (Muisc ->iTunes->iTunes Media) as iTunes does by default; the only difference is my media is on the HDD, although it is symlinked to the SSD.
IV
I tried File->Library->Import Playlist, and selected the XML file I had saved from my old computer and transferred to the MBP. After a few hours, my music was all there. All metadata was intact, except for date added. (which, as I said, is important to me).
If you've made it this far, thank you! Just a bit more.
V
I cleared the iTunes library then opened iTunes while clicking option, and selected the .itl file as my library. I opened iTunes, and nothing imported.
That's where I am right now. I really want to keep my date added info, but I can't tell how to do that. Do I import the XML file after selecting the library? Should it work exactly how I did it?
Any and all input greatly appreciated!
