So, is there a performance decrease when you increase the resolution to "more space" from the default "retina" ?

Also, since there are no moving parts, is there a point in ever shutting down the computer and not just sleeping it to carry it around?

Yes, you're rendering more pixels, so it is more taxing. Depending on what you're doing you may see a performance/battery hit.
