Noticed my Retina Macbook Pro has been getting very hot with use.

I have Istat Menu running and it shows a huge spike in CPU usage.

MDS runs at 96-99%.

What is that related to and should I shut it off?

(Running Mountain Lion BTW)

you are missing details.. like what temps are you seeing..

open activity monitor and see what is using the CPU

Temperature is at 122 degrees.

Not sure what "too high" would be.

It seems Mail may be the culprit taking up 22% CPU. But even shutting that down I am still seeing spikes.

Checking Activity Monitor and CPU usage but I can't seem to get a firm reading as it keeps changing numbers and positions.

Ultimately, I am new at trying to decipher this kind of thing.

If someone can tell me what "too hot" may be, I would appreciate.

Nice to know the system will automatically shut down if it gets too hot to prevent damage.
