I had an old lcd tv lying around and I decided to use it as an external monitor. The inputs are VGA and DVI.

Since my retina macbook pro did not have either, I needed to get either a Mini Display Port - DVI adaptor or an HDMI - DVI adaptor (preferred DVI over VGA).
I settled on an HDMI - DVI adaptor (it was cheaper).

However, when I plugged it into the mac the monitor did not display anything and simply said "going into power save mode." In addition, while the monitor did not display anything, plugging in the adaptor triggered the dGPU, making me think that the mac is trying to connect to the monitor but something is wrong.

I tried again with another older mac (Mini Dvi -> Hdmi -> DVI), and got the same results.

I thought it was a cable issue, but when I plugged in an Xbox 360, it worked just fine.

I also tried boot camp but that didn't work either. Both macs are running Mavericks.

Any possible solutions?
