HI guys

About a year ago I bought an MBP (non retina) mid 2012 i5.
I have since added 16gb ram, taken the dvd drive out and replaced hdd with 500gb ssd.
The machine works pretty well, however I recently stood on it and have cracked the screen in right hand corner.

The newer MBP's seem so expensive and very hard to upgrade.
Im looking at the Retina MBP 2012 i7, which I will upgrade where possible (ram, ssd etc).

Just wondering if there is significant improvement between the non-retina and retina 2012 models?
I have started to use Adobe way more now and whilst it renders, it is a little bit slow.

Alternatively is there perhaps an Imac I could go for which I could upgrade in a similar way?

Any advice would be great

The Retina models do not have user upgradeable RAM like your 2012. The SSD's are upgradeable until 2015 but not as cost effective as your 2012. The 2016-current are not upgradeable at all.

I'm thinking about upgrading my 2012 Retina 15" from the 256gb SSD to a 2TB SSD. I found this article helpful:

https://www.anysoftwaretools.com/best-ssd-for-macbook-pro/

Your machine takes takes a different size SSD than in that article. The hard drive you would need is $380, or about double a normal SSD, and you can't just go pick one up at Best Buy like the 2.5" one. They are a blade style drive like the m.2 drives but if I remember were still SATA based and they had their own proprietary connector.

I can't recommended 2012 15" because they have a often problems with GPU, 13" is old and will be difficult to find any parts like for example battery, I can recommend models Late 2013-2015 you can get version with 16GB memory and SSD is upgradable

Thanks guys

So the Retina isn't as up gradable, oh well, that's a shame.

As mentioned the mid 2012, now Ive maxed it out does run very well, however, video editing is it a little bit slow, but again not that bad.

What I might do then is look for a later model than I have with a good processor, good ram and then see what I can do with the hard drive.

However, as my screen is a little bit broken at the moment, could I replace with a Retina one, or a better one, as Im sure it probably has dead pixels too..?

I will say, my 2012 15" rMBP is my daily drive still with a 2015 that sits beside it. I'm moving up to a 2019 16", but this 2012 has been the best computer I have ever owned and the fact that it is my workhorse now after more than 7 years I find incredible.
