Has anyone managed to beat a price of 1989.99 for the base RMBP with the education coupon through bargaining or whatever?

Some Best Buys around me have open box specials on the Retina already ... Those came out to $1889.99. Depends on if you're okay with buying a second hand laptop.

I went to one Best Buy and was ready to purchase, had the coupon, but my student ID was not with me (travelling at the time).

I purchased at a Best Buy in my hometown (came at 9:30 pm 30 min before close on a Sat night) and they didn't ask for ID, had my $100 coupon in hand. Got the 1989.99+tax price. No gift cards.

Looks like the sale is going on for a 3rd week now and the coupon is valid until Sept since it's a back-to-school discount.

best I've seen on MR is 1749, mine was 1799 but creaked something terrible. Took it to the apple store and no more creaking. If you're very careful with your stuff and don't want complications I would say that it's not worth the savings especially now that the shipping dates on apple.com are down to 1-2 weeks

1799?, was it an open box?

yes. Use the bestbuy iphone app to get more accurate results than the bestbuy site. It make take more time to locate one at a good price than getting it straight from apple.com though so ask yourself if the 1 to 2 bills saved is really worth it to you (compared to student price + $100 itunes card).

Another thing to mention is that I previously though the itunes card could be used on products at the store. And was even informed by an employee that all I needed to do was DL the app to pull funds from the itunes account. Later , that was corrected to state that it only worked with credit cards. In that sense, the $100 card could potentially be less useful to you than say the best buy gift card (comparing new purchases).

They allow you use the coupon on top of their sales price?

For me.

No. Best buy after taxes was 2000 dollars. They took off a good 400 because of student discounts. And I was able to charge it on my BB card and get 0% so I'll be paying that off in the 3 months. :)
