I've been a longtime Thinkpad user. One thing that I've loved about it is the option of getting hi-res screens (FHD) so I can more when doing development work. I recently tried a rMBP in the store and found the screen scaling option a great feature.

Is such an option available when running Windows on Bootcamp?

When you run Windows you can scale the resolution and make the elemens bigger/smaller with the DPI.

Oh. I thought that it was the display hardware that did the scaling (somewhat like how laptops stretch images if you choose a resolution lower than the native res). Does this mean that games on Windows or even on the Mac would require significant GPU horsepower to run?

I was somewhat hoping I could still play games on it. (Civ 5 and the Total War series)

The rMBP 15" has quite a good dedicated graphics processor, so you can still play some games at its native resolution. Either that or 1920 x 1200. It's not impossible.
