Retina Mini with Hub

I have a 30 dollar cheap USB 3.0 hub with a power adapter and the box says it runs 2.1amps on it, but my iPhone 5C will charge and sync when plugged into the hub, but the Retina Mini iPad will only sync data, is there another stat that I should be concerned about when buying a new hub? I really need more ports here,

Doesn't mater what the power adapter says, its the rating of the hub ports you need to look at. You could feed it with 10 amps, wouldn't matter.
