When I go to About This Mac, click the Storage tab....... the graphical display there shows 89gb used for storage.

Where and what is this? I use Time Machine writing to an External drive.

How did I get this 89gb back,?

That is Time Machines local snapshots and is normal. You can ignore it and if your disk starts to get full from it, the OS will start to purge data from the space.

If you notice, when you look in Finder that space is not included in the free space calculation since the OS will wipe it if you need the space.

If you want, you can zero it out by turning Time Machine off then back on again.

Totally normal though.
