I own a Macbook Pro mid-2011 & it died again to logic board failure (it died a couple of years back, but Apple recalled that model, so I got it replaced for free). I took out the SSD & connected it with SATA-USB cable to my Windows laptop. It appears on device management & device and printers. USB even recognises it & have the option to eject, but it doesn't appear on Windows Explorer. I tried HFSExplorer, but that didn't work since my Macbook was up to date & using APFS. Is it only accessible via Mac then? If I run it as an external drive on my friend's Macbook, will the drive do anything to her Macbook if it asks me to NetBoot it (I got the flashing globe when I tried starting up on my dead Macbook)?

Windows won't recognize the file system, but if it sees the physical device then yeah that's a good thing.

I would plug the drive into your friend's Macbook after she has already logged in before trying to boot from it (?)
