Retrieving Mail Visual Cue

Okay so when I first used the Mail application, it didn't show any kind of visual cue of accessing the server when trying to get my email. Then I started getting a spiraling circular ring, but now all of a sudden it's gone again. Is there a bug in Mail with Mac OS X 10.6.4?
 
Just sent an email and the spinning gray circle was next to the sent box.
