Retrieving photos from back-up

My 3G phone is almost worthless with iOS 4.2 on it so I saved back to 3.1.3. Before doing so I performed a back-up just in case I need to restore my phone back. Not that i have successfully saved back 3.1.3 and found my found that that phone works like it should I updated the software back to 4.2 and restored from my saved back-up but my photos did not reload. Is there a way I can get them back from the back-up or am I out of luck? Any help would be appreciated.
